OUR FIGHT

In 2020, there were a series of racial injustices that were committed towards dark-skinned people within a close period of time. In the wake of the George Floyd incident, the world came together in a heart-warming manner, protesting in solitude on all major social media platforms, signing petitions, as well as generously donating to anti-racism funds. This brings back a glimmer of hope for humanity, seeing how people instantly recognized the injustice in the system, and fought for equality regardless of their race and religion, culture or creed.

However, while these issues are more palpable in the Western World, it is undeniable that they are still prevalent in our beloved country, Malaysia.

Here at The Equality Project, we understand that many Malaysians feel rather helpless when it comes to fighting for the anti-racism cause, besides reposting awareness posts on our social media and making donations. At the same time, there is a burning desire in our hearts to do our part and make a change within our community.

HERE'S WHAT WE PROPOSE.

Yes. Racism is sensitive and a hard topic to approach. But please remember that there are people dying and hurting everyday due to the lack of awareness on racism. The least we can do is to educate ourselves. Let's rise to the challenge and start with educating ourselves on the racism that still exists around the world and especially, in Malaysia.

Never think your voice and opinion do not matter. You are a productive and contributing member of the society and country and you can play your role by educating yourselves and spreading awareness to those around you.

EDUCATE YOURSELF. EDUCATE OTHERS.

People of color are facing racial injustice on a daily basis and they, more than anyone, wish to see a positive change in society. However, the burden is not on them to educate us on the issues that are painful for them to bring up. It is our responsibility to educate ourselves on the and the people around us on the anti-racism movement, to expose ourselves to the injustice done to people of color and ways to reach out and help them. Helping Hands

REACH OUT, CARE.

If you happen to know anyone who is suffering from racial oppression (or any form of oppression for that matter), reach out to them, care for them. It may take you half-an hour or an hour out of  your day, but they get to let out years and years of pent up anguish and they'll feel infinitely better, knowing that someone cares. Do your best to help in whatever way you can, but note that more often than not, all they need is a listening ear. So, listen, and show them that you understand what they're going through. HAVE DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS

It is almost a given that we have some difficult people in our lives that are rather set in their ways. However, instead of giving up on them, try looking at this from another perspective : You have decided to be an antiracist due to the things that have raised your awareness. Your current decision to teach those around you could then lead to their decision to teach those around them. It's a domino effect, and you could potentially change the mentality of hundreds of people. If you think in this manner, the decision to enter a difficult conversation would be way easier because it becomes more worth it. Click the button below to read our post on how to have difficult conversations.
